This dream comes with a cost
While an artist is not famous, they pay their own way to get their music heard. Here’s how it adds up.
Upwards of NZD$500 to record one song – and an album may have 10 or more songs. Sometimes also, fees to contributing artists who added their part.
Then, songs get sent away for mastering. Costs vary. Uploading tracks to Spotify, Amazon and other platforms costs a little more. Producing CDs, or some other tangible copy, adds upwards of another NZD$1000. Plus, there are live performances, time spent in writing, rehearsal, design of release artwork, compiling & filing industry reports – and more.

Being a patron of the Arts has its own rewards. The real and practical benefit of your support is that you make music possible that might not otherwise be heard.
We often hear artists say on stage that the song they’re about to sing is ‘an original’. As if they’re hoping to gauge reception to it, or as a way of explaining why you may not have heard it before, and why you might not be able to sing along right away.
The thing is, every song we stream, every song that’s made it to film, TV and radio was once ‘an original’. The brutal truth is that it takes a considerable investment to get songs out onto the platforms where they can be heard.
