What it costs to make music

Making an album can cost around $10,000. Here’s how it adds up.

  • It costs upwards from NZD$500 to record one song.

  • An album typically has 10 or more tracks.

  • Contributing artists sometimes step in for free – others are paid session players.

  • When producer and artist think we’ve got a finished product, it gets sent away for mastering. Costs vary, depending on who we use at the time.

  • CD’s add upwards of another NZD$1000 to the cost.

  • Add a little more time and petrol to get to venues to deliver live performances.

  • And all recording artists put an extraordinary amount of time into the recording sessions – all whilst continuing to write, rehearse, design release artwork, attend to industry reporting and more.

We often hear artists say on stage that the song they’re about to sing is ‘an original’.  As if they’re hoping to gauge reception to it, or as a way of explaining why you may not have heard it before, and why you might not be able to sing along right away.

The thing is, every song we stream, every song that’s made it to film, TV and radio was once ‘an original’.  The brutal truth is that it takes a considerable investment to get songs out onto the platforms where they can be heard.
